The Hide Hotel, Flims Switzerland
With our kid's first official winter ski break on our doorstep since relocating to Zurich Lake it was time to hit the slopes and test out the local surrounds. Now when I mean local surrounds I mean a drive around 60 or so minutes just long enough before the dreaded "are we there yet?". Yes my kid may be well accustomed to flying but being passengers in a car - not!
We selected Flims not only for its close proximity to Zurich but also for what it offers skiers, more than 235km of pistes over two main valleys know as the LAAX ski area. See the ski map here.
Having stayed in numerous Design hotels over the past few years in both Munich and Milan I read about the recently launched The Hide Hotel Flims, marketing themselves as a ski in/ski out resort. Having never been to this type of hotel before we wanted to give it a go and see if it really made such a difference. My last visit to Flims in fact was some 20 years ago for an overnight stay in the main village so I was keen to revisit this cute little village. ( Coming soon my local guide Flims/Laax)
So how did the Hide Hotel Flims rate?
Don't expect a stand alone building, instead the hotel is spread over several levels within the newly built Stenna complex which has anchored itself carefully to bridge both Flims village to Flims Waldhaus. Situated only meters away from the cable car station which takes you to the LAAX ski area. The position just doesn't get any better than this!
Due to its location within the Stenna Complex, the facilities cater to both hotel guests and to the public. In the mall you'll find various dining opportunities, shops related to skiing, fashion, a supermarket, a cinema, a medical facility, a pharmacy just to name a few as well as the Kindercity to keep the little ones entertained while you ski or apres ski!
If you’re hitting the slopes the hotel provides guests with key only access to a ski room conviently located on the exterior face of the building on the same level as the cable car ticketing office, Ella and the bus terminal.
Good to know
+The Hotel pool/spa wasn't available during our stay as it is currently under construction and will open in the Spring of 2019. You can however book an in room massage. Do note they are not equiped with mobile massage tables.
All of the 47 rooms are located on the 3rd level of the hotel and face either the mountain or the valley. We booked 3 valley facing rooms during our stay ROOMS 302 /304/ 310. Although each of the rooms had slightly different layouts due to structural elements, they were well designed and catered for plenty of storage. We found the rooms only received the very early morning sun which was the only disadvantage as you could't really make use of the outdoor space.
Good to know
+A pleasant surprise was The Hide backpack which could be used during the stay.
Don’t expect personalised service during your stay. There is also no room service available.
Good to know
+You can purchase the ski/cable car tickets in house and have them charged to your room
A pleasant breakfast with a choice of breads, cereal, cold cuts and cheeses. If you like egg dishes ask for an omelette.
Good to know
+If breakfast isn't included in your rate I would definitely recommend eating at Ella, conveniently located within the Stenna Complex. They serve delicious food and great coffee & chai latte!!After a days ski it’s fun to hang out there with the kids and enjoy apres ski.l drinks and snacks
A great hotel location for ski in /ski out to get the young ones onto the slopes with little to no fuss.
The Kindercity is a great fall back option when your kids want to do something indoors after a day of skiing with and without parents present.
WHAT THE KIDS LIKED BEST
The chupa chups were a big hit when they arrived to their rooms.
WOULD WE RETURN?
Having just opened there were definitely teething problems which I'm sure they'll work through over time with the help of customer feedback. We’d definitely give it another go next season.
